Learning Commons...

1The Library Commons area is our multi-use learning area in the centre of the Library. The Commons is designed to not just be a flexible physcial learning space but also an environment for students needing a range of resources, materials and services, including access to a qualified teacher-librarian and support staff.

The Library program focus is the academic needs of all students.  Providing instruction in a range of 21stC skills is very important.  Reading skills, including reading for recreation is highly valued and a priority.  A current and diverse collection, both print and digital, is promoted and very accessible. In addition, the Commons has 2 computing labs and 60 Lenovo laptops available to students when classes have not reserved.  Many teachers reserve areas in the Library daily for collaborative or individual projects.
Parents are always welcome to use the library for finding reading material, doing research or accessing our services.  We're usually open between 7:30-5:30 but we are always open for students online 24/7

A Room With a View...

Our centre is located upstairs in Room255.  Although KSS has a Library that is the envy of many, we are more than just a great space!  The KSS Library strives to be a exemplary school library program focused on the needs of our 21st Century learners!  Students may utilize Library services in various methods. The Commons is open before school, lunch and after school. Many services are accessed online 24/7. Although KSS has a large accessible Learning Commons with a vital library program occasionally seating and spaces are limited- please check the board.

Expertise When You Need It:

Our program includes facility, staff and collection. The Library is staffed by expert personnel who provide teaching, technical and literacy support to students. Sharon Bede and Al Smith are your teacher-librarians. They are staffed 1.6 time. Mrs. Kole, the very capable Library Assistant is fulltime. An assortment of volunteers and student TA's serve patrons.  Visit us anytime and explore the resources and services available to everyone.

Form and Function...

The space includes30 computers and 60 laptops equipped with research and productivity software, such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite and, and more.....   Resources such as, eReaders, , video camcorders, cameras, LCD projectors, Smartboards and other hardware is available.  Consulting and specialty instruction is available by appointment.  Tutoring | AV Loans

Additional assets include a reading lounge, seminar room, printer/copier, Catalog stations, Smartboard panels, TVvideo station, displays, periodicals, and reference stacks.  The various resources and services are frequently used by students, staff and visitors but class instruction will take priorty over drop-in use.
The teaching spaces and labs are reserved by instructional faculty members, in collaboration with a teacher-librarian.   It is open during all Library opening hours- am/lunch/afterschool.

Shhhh!

Although any facility full of teens is never quiet, Library staff monitor noise and behaviour to retain a quiet and efficient location for academic pursuits.  Many students with Resource Periods(spares) use the Library to complete homework or study and read.  While in the Library, 'Peace, order and good scholarship'  are required.

Libraries Improve LIves...

The KSS Library program strives to serve everyone.  If we can support your family drop by and visit or contact us online.

Access- Hours...

The Library is open whenever a teacher-librarian is on duty.  Special arrangements for groups must be made with admin.  Parents may work in the library as long as there is one library staff member on duty.   We'd be glad to make arrangements if we can plan ahead.  Extended hours are flexible upon advanced notice and request   but our online library is open 24/7. If you need service ASK-a-Librarian>

CBC Ideas- Plagiarism , from November 10 > Listen

Plagiarsm is a dirty word. Cut and paste someone's work, and you're a thief. But charges of plagiarism get murky when it comes to artistic creation. Is “appropriation” — borrowing or higher cribbing — really stealing? Either we need a new word to talk about literary and artistic creativity, or we need more
plagiarism. Kim Kierans explores the issue. More audio> CBC.ca/podcasting
