Summer Workshop: Library 2.0

introduction

"...Proponents of this concept expect that ultimately the Library 2.0 model for service will replace traditional, one-directional service offerings that have characterized libraries for centuries...."
( wikipedia)
".... ” Libraries are in the habit of providing the same services and the same programs to the same groups....". "....Chris Anderson, editor-in-chief of Wired, who coined the phrase 'longtail', where the length of customers whom seek unique content far outways those that desire just the popular.
( Library Journal)

This hands-on workshop is intended to familiarize participants with some new and exciting web based tools that have significant learning potential. The objectives will include:

  • participants will explore an assortment of web 2.0 innovations
  • participants will build some experimental resources
  • participants will develop knowledge about web 2.0 innovations, including educational advantages and pitfalls
  • participants will develop skills in manipulating multi media
  • participants will develop skills in managing information and sources

what is library 2.0?

Libraries are changing.  Libraries have changed.
Library Journal...http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA6365200.html

_____________________________________

Library 2.0 is a loosely defined model for a modernized form of library service that reflects a transition within the library world in the way that services are delivered to users. Jo-Anne Naslund of UBC, writes in Wikipedia....

What is school library 2.0?

Beyond the tools themselves, web 2.0 is often described as an interactive, highly social digital milieu (Solomon & Schrum, 2007; Richardson, 2006). This media-rich space is conducive to student interaction and collaboration due to an infinite variety of web 2.0 tools - blogs, wikis, RSS, podcasts and social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook (Kirkland, 2007). As many of these web 2.0 tools are brought into the classroom, the nature of student work and learning changes. "When a student's work is seen, and commented on, and collaboratively enhanced by a larger participative audience, students are drawn into extended educational 'conversations'" (Hargadon, 2008).

A critical question in this discourse, however, is which web 2.0 tools are the most useful and which promote learning? Generally, we believe that social media encourages students to interact in new, meaningful ways and engages them in a technological universe that they have grown up in. As Harris (2005) rightly suggests,

"The digitally reshifted school library draws upon ideas from Web 2.0 and Library 2.0 to create a vision for School Library 2.0. ...School Library 2.0 is about creating a participatory, social, user-centered environment rich with technology that is focused on interactivity and collaboration. This transformation must be based on one primary goal - student success."

The social, participatory web now seems increasingly important to academic success, even integral to building a digital identity for many teens and pre-teens (Boyd & Ellison, 2007). However, compared to their technology-infused lives at home, Prensky (2008) reports that middle and high-school students state that activities at school are 'boring' between 50-70% of the time. He recommends using social media to meet curricular objectives while getting K-12 students to play in the interactive digital playground that is web 2.0 (Prensky, 2008).

Some educators are using social software to engage students bored by traditional classroom activities (Kirkland, 2007). However, deciding whether social software tools are pedagogically-appropriate, and how to implement them effectively, is critical to their successful application in K-12. As a first step, teacher-librarians can examine software closely and learn about its impact in the lives of students after school (Kirkland, 2007).( UBC)

The Thinking Space blog has a comprehensive summary of the web 2.0 evolution, including an analysis of the web guru Tim O'Reilly.

Web 2.0 by example:

Web 1.0   Web 2.0
DoubleClick --> Google AdSense
Ofoto --> Flickr
Akamai --> BitTorrent
mp3.com --> Napster
Britannica Online --> Wikipedia
personal websites --> blogging
evite --> upcoming.org and EVDB
domain name speculation --> search engine optimization
page views --> cost per click
screen scraping --> web services
publishing --> participation
content management systems --> wikis
directories (taxonomy) --> tagging ("folksonomy")
stickiness --> syndication

enabling a new teacher-librarian

" I am not your grandmothers' librarian!". Library 2.0 tools and methods are just one way to enable productivity and address the issue of patron diversity. Awareness of the lexicon and potential power of some tools can enrich your library program in many ways. Not only do many new tools assist the teacher's own productivity but can assist services to students and staff.

Koechlin and Zwaan have just written about the virtue of planning for differentiated learning methods.( Teacher-Librarian, June 2008 ) Their key suggestions list content, process, product, and environment as the design elements.

This methodology underlines the core of the library 'Research Process'. Developing a variety of hi-tech and hi-touch resources into the library is a great way to address the diversity of learners including the reluctant reader.

Darlene Fichter of USASK, has outlined her take with a formula. Library 2.0 =
    (books 'n stuff      + people    + radical trust)
     x participation
.
  Her interesting variable is ' radical trust'. "Radical trust is about trusting the community. We know that abuse can happen, but we trust (radically) that the community and participation will work..."(Fichter)

a deeper toolbox- a newer workbench

Library 2.0 tools and methods are diverse and rapidly developing. Today's literate person is choosing to use these tools without us. Library 2.0 tools and methods can be customized by teacher-librarians and their patrons.

The virtues include:

  • user invented-(mashup) not always corporate designed
  • cost
  • easy learning curve
  • universal access
  • expandability
  • choice
  • scope

The drawbacks include:

    • more time to learn
    • web based only- need to be online
    • too much choice

beyond email

New tools include:

  • Google- more than a search engine
  • blogsphere- share your words
  • social bookmarking - share your favourites
  • social networks - build a community
  • multimedia: streaming video and audio
  • ebooks / ezines
  • telephone and videomail -
  • travel and mapping services- integrate geography
  • online retail and marketplaces - shop without spending money
  • cross-searchable databases - finding the right content

blog this!

What is the target audience is of Twitter? or Facebook? What is the downside to these technologies?( there always is some). I consider myself tech savvy, but choose to not participate unless I am motivated. eg. I do not twitter my time away but I blog when I need to rant! I also blog by interest group- eg. sharing content/issues with BCTLA or George at CBC.....
