Databases and Libraries are valuable information aides

Selection and Vetting: Libraries and Databases have resources that have been carefully chosen by trained librarians. (WWW is an indiscriminate collection of files. Google WWW queries require difficult filtering and critical reading...
Published and Professional: Libraries and Databases contain resources that have been carefully edited and professionally published; whereas, web sites and blogs are written by amateurs or general public
Source Types and Formats: Libraries contain books, magazines, newspapers, newsletters, journals, CD's, DVD's, videos, maps, manuscripts, pamphlets, works of art, photographs, etc.  Databases contain all the same resources but digitized and accessible 24/7
Accessible: If   the student researcher understands how information is organized, the task of finding quality materials is more efficient. Some databases have free access, while others are available through a library's paid subscription- school, public or university library.

Why students learn how to access databases?

Digitizing has meant the merging of new and previously published information.  We experience the rapidity of emerging and converging content in our daily life. ( radio, music, cell phones, etc.)   Databases collect, sort, edit and distribute excellent sources of information that we need and use everyday.
What about Google?  Despite the simple interface of Google, accurate selection is still not easy- it takes sophisticated reading skills.  For critical thinking or research needs, Google is not the recommended medium for Information research process. Although sometimes being free, databases are not always easy to access. Most people need some initial coaching and practice. To succeed with post secondary research needs, students needs to be proficient database users.

Why students use online magazines, journals, newspaper articles or book excerpts in your homework?

Use excerpts( quotes) because they  are: adaptable, current, well-written, and easily sent to your email.  Acquire and insert a quote from an article to add POWER to your thesis or writing. 

How do I access online services?

Accessing databases or other gateways often have two standards: On-campus and Remote Access.
     1. login with user name and password
     2. automatic authentication

Need remote access from home? Whether reference databases,
encylopedia,  online magazines, or streaming educational video, 
theKSS LIBRARY has a comprehensive  menu to serve your
information needs :

1. Sign in with Firstclass user ID: to view login /password list
2. Download or view from FirstClass > KSS Students >Library>Student Databases Passwords
3. Download from KSS LAN I:/drive/handout/Library/Student Databases Passwords.doc
4. Email Request to Librarian>Request Form

   These GATEWAY services are paid subscriptions for KSS students only ;
   therefore, the passwords may not be  published through an insecure web site.
