2008 O.C.S.A.A. Track and Field Information Package: Here are a number of points that will require your close attention, and an outline for the 2008 Track & Field season.
Bussing has been determined by your (or your Athletic Director¹s) communication with Kathy Lafontaine....you might want to double check with her that she has provided bussing for you. If at some point you will NOT need bussing please let Kathy know.
Equipment Fee & Storage: We do have our own locker at the Apple Bowl ... Hooray! Coaches who wish one may sign out a key from me for the season ... but in order for this to work we'll have to be extremely careful about not loosing them and about getting all equipment back into the locker once we're done. If each school could donate a couple of pieces of good equipment (tape measures, shots, discus, javelins, rakes, etc …) it would be a huge help … ALL of the equipment we use so far has come from K.S.S..

When athletes arrive at the track they will find three separate registration tables; a new athletes table (where athletes without a number can get one assigned to them), a track events table, and a field events table. If they don’t have a number yet they should start by getting one from the new athletes table. At the “Field Events” table athletes can sign themselves up for events by putting their name and number directly onto the event sheets themselves. At the track events table athletes should fill out one sticky tag for every track event they wish to compete in. They should then take a safety pin and pin all of their tags, backs still attached, to their jersey. For laned events a start line official will take their tag and assign them a lane. For non-laned events athletes tags will be removed at the finish line.
· Perhaps a good idea to have athletes write their numbers in permanent felt marker on their mid-thigh as they do in triathlon ~?~ · Try to get your athletes to keep their one safety pin throughout the entire season
Officiating: These meets only work if EVERYONE pitches in to help make them happen. In the past the level of help and co-operation has been nothing shy of AWESOME … and if we can just keep that up again this year things are sure to run smoothly. Each school will be assigned an event to run for the duration of the season, and it thereby becomes that’s school’s responsibility to look after the officiating and smooth running of that event on days it’s being held. Most events usually require at least two people to run smoothly, though of course the more the merrier. We are also chronically short of help at the finish line, so if each school could designate at least one finish line official on days that their event is not running (two or three is better still) that would be a huge help. · While we are trying our best to make these all-comers events as much of a competitive experience as possible the number one overlying objective is that it should be safe, fun, and rewarding. · Don’t hesitate to be a little more flexible with the rules if the situation merits it (use common sense of course) · We are training athletes how to be good competitors here so please strongly emphasize, acknowledge, and reward proper track and field etiquette (helping with hurdles, not crossing the infield, staying in your lane at races end, thanking officials, looking out for athletes on the track, etc... etc …)
Any problems or concerns you may have should be directed to the Zone Commissioner (Tom Carlson @ Kelowna Secondary School). Please realize that this is a team effort and that the meets can only go ahead as scheduled if all schools contribute and live up to their responsibilities.
